Loaded gun found at Darlington High

DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - A high school student has been taken into custody after authorities found a loaded gun in their possession.

The possible weapon was reported to a teacher at Darlington High School by another student before 2:30 p.m. Thursday. That teacher immediately relayed the information to an administrator that called upon the School's Resource Officer to investigate.

Darlington Co. sheriff uses magazines to reach kids

County Sheriff Wayne Byrd saw information he felt would be important to the
safety of family members so he is asking businesses throughout the county to
raise financial support to publish and distribute the material.

Three informational magazines, Let's All Work to Fight Drug Abuse; Your Life, Your World, Safe and Secure; and Your Life, Your Choices, Right or Wrong have been distributed to area schools and organizations to be made available to county families, especially those with students in school.

Market on Darlington Square to reopen Saturday

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Market on Darlington Square reopens Saturday, May 18, according to a news release. Farmers and nurseries will have a variety of trees, plants, flowers and shrubs as well as local vegetables and strawberries.

Handcrafted items, baked goods, purses, perfumes, food and other goods can be found at the Market, which will be held from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Public Square on Main Street on the third Saturday of the each month from April to September.

Fatal crash in Darlington under investigation

DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A fatal accident occurred around 12:10 a.m. Tuesday morning in Darlington County, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol officials.

The driver and sole occupant of a 2004 Honda Accord was traveling north on secondary Highway 36 when the driver ran off the right side of the road, SCHP Trooper Bob Beres said. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and was ejected from the vehicle.

Darlington County Coroner JT Hardee identified the driver as 54-year-old Garrett Freeman.

Fire damages kitchen of Florence home

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Fire crews were able to contain the fire that sparked in the kitchen of a Florence area home.

That fire was reported around 6:30 p.m. Sunday on the 1500 block of Scott Drive. the first crews on scene saw smoke pouring from the front of the house.

The blaze was quickly located in the kitchen and put out. Florence Fire spokesman and Fire Marshal Ken Carr says no one was injured and the damage was contained to the kitchen of the home.
